アゲラタム ageratum

　アゲラタムの1cm位の小さな花には、筒状花が密集しています。舌状花はついていません。ひとつの花のまとまりからは、雌しべが長く伸びており、糸くずがついたように見えます。

　セイヨウフジバカマ(mistflower)の花に、非常に似ていますが、セイヨウフジバカマは赤紫の花をつけないので、この花はアゲラタムと同定できます。

　この花は、花もちがよいので、アゲタラムと名付けられました。アゲラタムとは、ギリシャ語の「老いない」を意味する言葉が、ラテン語化されたものです。ギリシャ語が花の名前の語源になっているものは多く、愛を意味するアガパンサス、風を意味するアネモネ、虹を意味するアイリス等々があります。夢のある名前たちですね。

　Ageratum's flowers, approximately 1 centimeter in diameter, are composed of many closely clustered tubular flowers. It does not have any ligulate flowers. From each flowers, the pistils extend outward, making them look as if they have lint on them. 

　Although it closely resembles the flowers Mistflower, since Mistflower does not produce reddish-purple flowers, this flower can be identified as Ageratum.

　This flower was named "Agetarum" because it stays fresh for a long time. The name "Agetarum" comes from a Latinized Greek word meaning "ageless." Many flower names are derived from Greek words, such as Agapanthus (meaning “love”), Anemone (meaning “wind”), and Iris (meaning “rainbow”), among others. Those names have dreamy feeling to me.
