小海老草(コエビソウ) shrimp plant

　苞（ほう）と呼ばれる特殊な形の赤い葉が、瓦が重なったように見えます。この構造は、エビの尻尾の節の重なりに似ているので、名前にエビがつきました。花は、環境や温度の条件が合えば、1年を通して咲き続けます。
　エビは、普段ゆっくりした動きですが、敵が近づくと、強力な腹筋を一気に収縮させ、目にも留まらぬ加速力で後方へダッシュします。敵と出会った時は、前方でなく後方にダッシュするのは、賢い選択だと思います。それしかできないのですが。

　Red leaves, known as "bracts," have a shape that resembles overlapping roof tiles uniquely. This structure resembles the overlapping segments of a shrimp's tail, which is why the name includes shrimp. If the environmental and temperature conditions are right, the flowers will continue to bloom throughout the year.
　Shrimp usually move slowly, but when a predator approaches, they rapidly contract their powerful abdominal muscles and dash backward with blinding speed. When they encounter an enemy, I think it's a wise choice to quickly jump back instead of forward. That's all they can do, though.
