クモの知性the Intelligence of spiders

　クモは本能で、網を張ることができるのですが、本能だけでは、周囲の状況に応じて、柔軟な形を作ることはできません。また、壊れた部分を修復することも行います。
　網の一部だけが壊れた場合、クモは破れた部分の糸を食べた上、糸を張り直し修復します。食べた糸は体内でタンパク質として吸収されるので、リサイクルされることになります。素晴らしい器官であり機関ですね。
　大きく壊れたときは、修復をあきらめたり、落ち込むことなく、直ぐに新しく張り直します。このように、状況に合わせた柔軟な対応ができるのは、本能だけでなく、知性を持ち合わせているからです。知性とは、答えのない問いに対して、自ら解決策をあみ出す精神的機能です。
　小さな生物が環境や状況に合わせて、柔軟に生きている姿を見るのは興味深いことです。

　Spiders are able to spin webs by instinct, but instinct alone does not allow them to adapt the shape of their webs flexibly to their surroundings. They also repair damaged areas. 
　If only a part of the web is damaged, the spider eats the threads from the torn section and weaves new threads to repair the web. Since the thread they eat is absorbed by the body as protein, it is essentially recycled. It's a wonderful organ and mechanism, isn't it? 
　If there is serious damage to a web, they don't give up on fixing it or get discouraged; they immediately rebuild a new one. Their capacity to respond flexibly to various situations doesn't solely rely on instinct but also their intelligence. Intelligence is the mental capacity to devise their own solutions to questions that have no answers. 
　It is fascinating to observe how small creatures adapt flexibly to their environment and circumstances.
