野鶏頭(ノゲイトウ) celosia

　ノゲイトウは、ろうそくの炎のような形をしています。ノゲイトウの英名は、Celosia（セロシア）です。この名前は、ギリシャ語の keleos（燃える） に由来します。
　ノゲイトウは、比較的に新しい品種かと思っていましたが、その歴史は古く、奈良時代に日本に渡来していたそうです。鑑賞用の他に、黄色の染料としても使われたそうです。

　The Celosia is shaped like a candle flame. This name "Celosia" comes from the Greek word "keleos" (to burn).
　I had thought that Celosia was a relative new variety, but it turns out it has a long history and was introduced to Japan as far back as the Nara period（the 700's）. Apparently, in addition to being admired for its beauty, it was also used as a yellow dye.
