秋葵(オクラ) okra

　オクラは野菜ですが、その花はハイビスカスやムクゲにも似ており、観賞用になります。咲いた花は、その日の内にしぼんで落ちてしまう、一日花です。
　英名がそのまま和名になっていますが、元を辿れば西アフリカのガーナ共和国で話される言語の一つである、トウィ語（Twi language）のnkuruma（ンクラマ）に由来します。

　Okra is a vegetable, but its flowers resemble those of Hibiscus and Rose of Sharon, and are almost as beautiful as ornamental flowers. 
These are "one-day flowers"—flowers that bloom and then wilt and fall off within the same day.
　Although the English name is used as the Japanese name, its origin can be traced back to "Nkuruma" in the Twi language, one of the languages spoken in the Republic of Ghana in West Africa.
