トマトの輪切り slicing tomato into rounds

　トマトを横に輪切りにすると、末広十字の形をした白い部分が現れます。末広十字とは、端にいくほど幅が広くなる紋章に使われる形状のことです。トマトの内部は、いくつかの部屋に分かれています。その部屋が4つある場合は、白い部分が十文字になります。４つ以外の場合は、星形です。部屋は普通3〜6個あります。
　部屋の中はゼリー状の物質で満たされており、その中に種が存在しています。このゼリー状の物質は、種が発芽するのを抑制する、植物ホルモンを含んでいます。そのお陰で、発芽に最適な春が来るまで、種は休眠状態です。
　自然の仕組みは、知れば知るほど面白いです。
　ところで、トマトは野菜か果物か、どちらでしょうか。この問題をめぐって、19世紀の末にアメリカで裁判が行われています。その背景は、野菜の輸入には関税が課されましたが、果物には課されないという状態でした。政府と輸入業者の戦いだったのです。結果は、トマトは野菜であるとの判決でした。判決理由は、野菜畑で作られるものは野菜で、果樹園で作られるものは果物でした。なんだか、スジが通っているようで、論理的ではない感じがします。
　さて、今の日本では、キュウリやナスと同様に、トマトは野菜と分類されています。しかし、植物学の分野では、子房が発達して種子を含む実はすべて果物とみなされます。種無しトマトもありますが・・・どちらにしろ、美味しければよいです。

If the number is anything other than four, it is a star shape. The typical count is usually between three and six rooms. 
　The room is filled with a jelly-like substance, and seeds are present within it. This substance contains plant hormone that inhibit seed germination. Thanks to the hormone, the seeds remain dormant until spring arrives when the ideal time for germination.
　The more one learn about workings of nature, the more fascinating they become.
　By the way, is a tomato a vegetable or a fruit? A court case concerning this issue took place in the U.S. at the end of the 19th century. The background to this was a situation where tariffs were imposed on vegetable imports, but not on fruit. It was a battle between the government and the importers. The result was a ruling that the tomato is a vegetable. The ground for the decision was that crops grown in vegetable fields are vegetables, while those grown in orchards are fruits. It somehow seems to make sense, yet it doesn't feel logical.
　Now, in Japan today, tomatoes are classified as vegetables, just like cucumbers and eggplants. However, in the field of botany, any crop containing seeds that develops from an ovary is considered a fruit. There are seedless tomatoes, too... but either way, it doesn’t matter as long as they're delicious.
