凌霄花(ノウゼンカズラ) trumpet vine

　ノウゼンカズラの雌しべの先端は、薄く平べったい「しゃもじ」のような形をしており、蛇が口を開けたように2枚に分かれています。さらに、内側は花粉を受け止めるために粘着性があります。この雌しべに、何かが触れると口は閉じます。これは、受粉を確実にするための仕掛けです。
　こんな仕掛けがあるのに、日本ではノウゼンカズラの花は、1〜2日で全体（含 雌しべ）がポロっと落ちてしまいます。つまり、種は作られません。進化の過程で、生殖機能は形骸化しました。挿し木や株分け、地下茎で増やせるので心配は不要です。
　ポロっと花が落ちる花でも、雌しべが残るものは種を作ります。

　The tip of the Trumpet Vine's pistil is shaped like a thin, flat rice paddle and is split in two, resembling a snake opening its mouth. Furthermore, the inside is sticky so as to catch pollen. When something touches this pistil, the mouth closes. This mechanism is designed to ensure pollination.
　Despite having such a system, the flowers in Japan drop off with the pistil after just a day or two. In other words, the seeds do not bear fruit. In the course of evolution, reproductive organs have become a mere formality. There is no need to worry, as they can be propagated via cuttings, division, or rhizomes.
　Flowers that fell off petals but keep their pistils generate seeds.
